Drugovich had the chance to replace Lance Stroll for the first practice session at the Italian Grand Prix, but Van der Garde pointed out the difficulties of spending the entire season as a reserve driver without many chances to race.

Aston Martin’s current driver lineup includes Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso, both set to continue with the team next year. This situation suggests that Drugovich may not have an immediate path to a race seat at Aston Martin.

Van der Garde spoke to ViaPlay about the rumors surrounding Drugovich potentially moving from Aston Martin to Alfa Romeo.

Alfa Romeo’s current driver lineup consists of Zhou Guanyu and Valtteri Bottas, with only Bottas confirmed for next year. Zhou’s F1 future remains uncertain, as the team has not yet announced a contract extension.

Van der Garde stated, “There are, of course, stories that he might go to another team next year and also become a race driver within Formula 1 [instead of a test driver].”

He praised Drugovich’s talent and track record in Formula 2, saying, “He’s a guy who has real talent, who has also shown in Formula 2 how to become champion, how to win races.”

Regarding the challenges of being a reserve driver, Van der Garde commented, “It’s so incredibly difficult, that you spend the whole year actually sitting next to the track. Then getting in [the car] here, you have to follow the team’s program, you can’t quite show what you can do. But one thing is for sure, the guy is really good, and I hope he gets the chance next year – maybe at Alfa Romeo.”

When asked if Alfa Romeo has shown interest in Drugovich, Van der Garde confirmed, “Yes.” He explained that it could be due to financial backing, Drugovich’s speed, his Formula 2 championship, and his valuable feedback from his current team. This combination could make him an attractive prospect for Alfa Romeo.
