MASON Greenwood has signed for a Spanish team on loan just minutes before the transfer window closed.

All charges were dropped this February but the Old Trafford outfit said Greenwood would leave the club last week.

And now La Liga club Getafe have completed a last minute season-long loan deal for Greenwood, subject to international clearance.

Tomorrow afternoon, the Spanish team travels to Real Madrid, though it’s unlikely he’ll be registered in time.

In Getafe’s match against Osasuna on September 17, Greenwood is most likely to make his debut.

According to reports, United will not be paying a loan fee for Greenwood and will be paying the majority of his salary.

The Madrid-based side will also cover a small contribution for his wages for the duration of the loan.

A United club statement read: “The move enables Greenwood to begin to rebuild his career away from Manchester United.

“The club will continue to offer its support to Mason and his family during this period of transition.”

Getafe play in the 17,393-capacity Coliseum Alfonso Pérez and currently sit twelfth in the league table.

Chief John Murtough had taken over discussions for the move to Getafe, according to MailOnline.

Greenwood had reportedly been set to be welcomed back into the fold before SunSport exclusively reported United had made a U-turn due to the volatile reaction.

Other English clubs were said to similarly fear a public backlash if they were to provide Greenwood with a return to the pitch.

The transfer window deadline passed for English clubs at 11pm, with initial inquiries from domestic teams not followed up.

If Greenwood, who earns £75,000 a week, hadn’t been sold, United could have been on the hook for up to £8 million.

This is due to the fact that he has two years left on his contract and the club has the option to extend it by an additional year.

Greenwood was instead forced to join a club abroad since she had no other choice.

Lazio, a premier European team, was said to have given Greenwood a last-ditch lifeline today morning, but the Italian deadline had already gone by 7 o’clock.

Saudi Arabia, where teams have already snatched up Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar, and Karim Benzema this season, made no queries.
