Cristiano Ronaldo and Michael Jordan, two of the most iconic figures in the world of sports, have now achieved a unique status as their brands find their place on the front of football jerseys.
Ronaldo, aged 38, might not be playing for a European team this season, having joined the Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr last year. However, his presence remains in European football as his boyhood club, Sporting CP, commemorates the 20th anniversary of his debut with a special tribute.
Sporting CP recently revealed their third kit for the season, which pays homage to Ronaldo. This kit, featuring a black shirt with gold sleeves and white cuff detailing, prominently displays his ‘CR7’ brand logo where the Nike swoosh would typically be found.
Ronaldo maintains a lifelong contract with Nike, the American sportswear manufacturer. Similarly, Michael Jordan has a comparable arrangement with his eponymous brand, making them among the select few athletes to enjoy this level of exposure.
The jersey, which marks this special occasion, will also be worn during domestic cup competitions and the Europa League matches as Sporting CP is part of this year’s group stages.
The excitement around this distinctive jersey began with a captivating video that the club shared for its unveiling. The video caption invites viewers to “travel back in time” from August 6, 2003, when Ronaldo made his debut, to August 6, 2023, commemorating 20 years of Estádio Jose Alvalade and five Ballon d’Or awards. It celebrates the union of the world’s best athletes in one piece of clothing.
This unique jersey quickly gained attention and popularity. It sold out on the first day it was available for purchase on Nike’s website, with tens of thousands of units sold within the first month alone.
