Cristiano Ronaldo was left seething with the referee after seeing his latest goal for Al-Nassr disallowed.
Cristiano Ronaldo erupted in a furious three-word tirade at the referee during the Al-Nassr vs. Al-Shabab match after the ex-Manchester United legend’s goal was disallowed on Wednesday. Ronaldo had already netted from the penalty spot before adding another, but a Saudi official’s intervention, backed by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), robbed him of a brace.
The 38-year-old found himself unmarked in the box after a Marcelo Brozovic corner and showcased his enduring athleticism, leaping high and directing his header into the top corner. Ronaldo had even indulged in his customary ‘siu’ celebration with elated Al-Nassr fans in the corner. However, Al-Shabab’s protests prompted VAR officials to review the situation, leading the referee to annul the goal.
This decision left Ronaldo seething, and he vehemently gestured and screamed at the officials to express his frustration.
Oddly enough, the perceived injustice seemed to ignite Ronaldo’s determination. He appeared intent on scoring and seized the opportunity to bag his elusive second goal when Gustavo Cuellar pushed him inside the box.
This time, the officials were in his favor and awarded a penalty. Ronaldo dusted himself off and calmly slotted it home, setting the stage for a potential hat-trick.
He then turned provider, assisting ex-Liverpool player Sadio Mane to make it 3-0, unselfishly squaring the ball for Mane to slot home under pressure.
When Ronaldo had a chance to secure his hat-trick in the second half, he surprised many by allowing one of his teammates to take the penalty. However, his teammate, Abdulrahman Ghareeb, had his attempt saved by the Al-Shabab goalkeeper, and although Ronaldo didn’t react, the crowd loudly booed, hoping to witness him complete a hat-trick of penalties.
