If President Luis Rubiales is fired over the incident of kissing a female player, the Spanish Football Federation has threatened to leave the European Football Federation (UEFA).
After Spain won the 2023 World Cup, Luis Rubiales, the president of the Spanish Football Federation, kissed the female team member who was played by Jenni Hermoso on the lips.
Mr. Rubiales refused to quit despite intense pressure and criticism and continued to maintain that the kiss was consensual. There is a high level of tension in the Spanish football landscape.
Following FIFA’s intervention, Mr. Rubiales was barred from any football-related activity for 90 days. Andreu Camps, the general secretary of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), stated that if the government kept meddling in the RFEF’s business, they could leave UEFA.
The resignation or dismissal of Luis Rubiales has been publicly urged by members of the Spanish cabinet. However, UEFA confederations will be permitted to conduct their own business without excessive interference from outside parties and in accordance with UEFA laws.
The fact that UEFA is enforcing that rule in this case is another reason for their silence. The Spanish Football Federation’s current stance is to continue to defend Mr. Rubiales.
A number of the coaching staff members of the Spanish women’s team departed, with the exception of head coach Jorge Vilda, and this had numerous negative effects as well. Montse Tome, Javier Lerga, and Eugenio Gonzalo Martin are three Spanish assistant coaches who have made the decision to retire.
These coaches and assistants have signed to strongly denounce the actions of Mr. Rubiales, president of the Spanish Football Federation.
Jenni Hermoso, a female player, stated in public that she never consented to and disapproved of Rubiales’ kiss.
