Red Bull’s Team Principal, Christian Horner, has disclosed that Max Verstappen and his race engineer, Gianpiero Lambiase (GP), underwent ‘counselling’ during the F1 summer break.
Horner discussed their relationship during the Dutch Grand Prix race weekend, describing them as “like an old married couple” and acknowledging their heated exchanges over the team radio in the past.
“They are like an old married couple,” said Horner. “You hear them b******* at each other and having a go. They’ve done a bit of counselling over the summer break. They’re back together, they look happy, and it’s a great partnership.”
Horner emphasized the unique relationship between a race engineer and a driver, stating that GP and Max have one of the best he has ever seen.
The public exchange of harsh words between Verstappen and Lambiase during the Belgian Grand Prix race weekend drew attention to their relationship. Verstappen criticized the team’s strategy, to which Lambiase responded, “OK, and then when the track was two seconds quicker for your final lap and you didn’t have any energy left, how would that have gone down?”
Verstappen later secured pole position for the grand prix and apologized to his race engineer for his outburst.
Horner hopes that the counseling will lead to a more positive and friendly dynamic on the team radio between Verstappen and Lambiase.
