Update: The €27.5m defender wants to join Barcelona or Real Madrid before moving to Saudi

Players that wear the Barcelona jersey have the opportunity to become a part of an illustrious tradition, as the jersey carries with it a brilliant history that will live on long after they are gone.

The allure of playing for the Blaugrana was largely captured by the club’s recent signing of Ilkay Gundogan, who completed a treble sweep with Manchester City in the most recent campaign.

Even Bernardo Silva expressed interest in signing with Barcelona, but the club was unable to raise the necessary funds to make the deal happen.

Joao Cancelo, on the other hand, is inching closer and closer toward a move to the Catalan giants, with only a few minor elements remaining to iron out.

Aymeric Laporte had the ambition of donning the Blaugrana jersey.

Now, Sam Lee of The Athletic has come out to tell that Aymeric Laporte also had aspirations of playing for either Real Madrid or Barcelona in the past.

However, no clubs shown interest in the player, and as a result, he ultimately decided to accept a $27.5 million contract with Al Nassr of the Saudi Pro League.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that Real Madrid’s position as a heavyweight in European soccer makes the club an attractive destination.

But Barcelona continues to be one of the most sought-after places for elite European players who are looking to make a name for themselves in their careers, despite the financial disturbances that have occurred over the years.

Why Barcelona did not attempt to sign Laporte when they had the chanceLaporte has been linked with a move to Barcelona numerous times over the years, including this summer, due to his style of play as a ball-playing center back. Laporte has been instrumental in helping City win 12 major titles.

La Liga’s reigning champions would, however, be overstacking a department that does not require immediate attention if they added to their defensive alternatives given recent acquisitions like as Inigo Martinez and Mikayil Faye this summer.

Additionally, the club’s poor resources make it difficult for them to pursue additions in a comfortable manner. Many of the targets that Barcelona has selected are unable to join owing to the fact that their price tags are too high.

As a result, considering the state of the economy and the level of competition in defense, signing Laporte would have been considered a luxury signing for the Catalans; yet, they did not go after him in the end.
