In the context of the defender’s shortage of personnel, Klopp is promoting the deal of a young 23-year-old defender from Torino
This transfer window has severely harmed Liverpool’s reputation. The haphazard attempts to acquire Romeo Lavia and Moises Caicedo have exposed the club’s ineffective transfer strategy, forcing them to scramble for options.
While the focus has primarily been on midfield concerns, it has diverted attention from a critical issue: the lack of defensive depth that needs urgent resolution.
Consequently, Liverpool is reportedly exploring options to address this pressing problem.
In the latest Liverpool transfer news, Football Insider reports that Torino’s Perr Schuurs is once again on Liverpool’s radar as Jurgen Klopp seeks defensive reinforcements.
Following unsuccessful pursuits of other targets, such as Micky van de Ven joining Tottenham Hotspur and Goncalo Inacio signing a new deal with Sporting CP, Schuurs is now seen as a reasonably priced solution for Liverpool, with a potential price tag of up to £30 million.
Additionally, a reliable source informed Football Insider that Liverpool’s captain, Virgil van Dijk, is well aware of Schuurs’ quality and is a strong admirer of the 23-year-old.
Perr Schuurs possesses notable strengths. He joined Torino in 2022 and made 30 Serie A appearances for the Italian club last season. During that time, Schuurs averaged 3.2 clearances per game, 1.7 tackles per game, was only dribbled past 0.4 times per game, won 55% of his duels, completed 77% of his dribbles, and did not commit any errors leading to opposition shots or goals.
Schuurs’ impressive statistics also rank him favorably among his peers in Europe’s top five leagues, placing him within the top 18% for successful take-ons per 90 and the highest 22% for tackles per 90 among defenders.
Former Premier League champion Marc Overmars previously hailed Schuurs as a “great Dutch talent” during the youngster’s four-year stint at Ajax.
Considering Schuurs’ profile and potential, he represents a logical upgrade for Joe Gomez, who has struggled for form and consistency after eight years at Anfield. Gomez’s difficulties have been exacerbated by persistent injuries, causing him to miss 233 games.
In the last three Premier League campaigns leading up to the current season, Gomez featured just 36 times and often appeared uncertain and error-prone when he did play.
Alan Shearer reinforced this perspective, stating, “Joe Gomez makes too many mistakes, and Virgil van Dijk does not look comfortable when he’s alongside him. There’s always a sense that they will concede when Gomez is in the lineup.”
As Liverpool aims to regain its place in the top four while managing Europa League football, Klopp must rely on the most dependable players, and unfortunately, Gomez does not fit into this category.
While Van Dijk and Ibrahim Konate are likely to remain Klopp’s first-choice defensive pair, Schuurs, aptly described as a “mountain” by reporter Josh Bunting, can provide valuable depth in a more reliable manner than Gomez.
