SPORT reports, Barca’s board has reached a preliminary agreement with Man City’s right-back Joao Cancelo. Along with that, they are about to retain a key member of the team, midfielder Frenkie de Jong.
In fact, BLD Barca has been eyeing Cancelo since January this year. However, in the end, Man City let the 29-year-old Portuguese player switch to Bayern on loan. Although with Bayern won the Bundesliga championship, Cancelo was not bought by the Allianz Arena team.
Unlike Bayern, Barca continues to pursue the versatile defender of Man City. With a preliminary agreement reached with Cancelo, Barca only needs to agree on a transfer fee with Man City to own the former Juventus defender.
Notably, there was some internal information in Barca because coach Xavi wanted to bring Cancelo to the Nou Camp, while sports director Deco was more “connected” with Ivan Fresneda. The reason Deco gave was that Valladolid’s right-back was not only cheap but also much younger than Cancelo (he was only 18 years old). However, according to coach Xavi, he did not have a conflict with Deco, who was his former teammate at Barca because of disagreements.
Elsewhere, Barca’s BLD, after extending the contract with goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen until 2028, is convincing De Jong to sign a new agreement. De Jong is still tied to Barca until 2026. According to the proposal from Barca’s BLD, they want De Jong to reduce his salary or receive delayed payment to share the financial burden with the club. If De Jong accepts, he will follow the path that Ter Stegen has chosen.
