After receiving criticism for not making any replacements during Manchester City’s 1-0 victory over Newcastle United, manager Pep Guardiola stated that he invited a supporter of the club to stand in his place on the sideline.
After a verbal altercation, Guardiola motioned to a supporter who was standing near the City bench to take over as manager of the team.
After the game, he explained that it was because of his choice not to make any replacements, which marked the first time since May 2022 that he had not made a single change in a Premier League game.
“He asked me to make the substitutions, one player out and one player in, and I asked him which one, because I didn’t know it,” recalled Guardiola. “He asked me to make the substitutions, one player out and one player in.”
“I told you to come over here and get it done.” I could see that the team at that time was still fighting, despite the fact that the rhythm might be challenging to enter at times.
“I looked over and noticed that the team was still there and competing for each ball. We have the ability to make substitutes, but it is ultimately up to the managers to determine whether or not to do so.

A number of key players, including Kevin De Bruyne, have been injured for Manchester City, and manager Pep Guardiola expressed his concern prior to their match against Newcastle.
However, Julián lvarez scored the only goal of the game in the first half to give City a 1-0 victory and ensuring that they would continue their unbeaten start to the season with two wins from their first two matches.
“This is the second game of the season, but it is proof of the reason why we won a lot,” stated Guardiola. “This is proof of the reason why we won a lot.”
It never ceases to amaze and astonish me how these athletes approach the game mentally and mentally approach the game.
“Considering that team and the circumstances we arrive in, which include a significant number of injuries and no rest, they played quite well. The way in which they defend, the way in which they run, and everybody’s devotion was just absolutely outstanding.
