‘No excuses’ – Man Utd star Bruno criticizes VAR’s refusal to use his hands to play ball in defeat to Tottenham

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes blasted the match officials for VAR no-call penalty decision against Tottenham.

  • Garnacho’s shot clearly struck Romero’s arm

WHAT HAPPENED?

In the 26th minute of the game against Tottenham Hotspur, Alejandro Garnacho’s effort from within the box struck Cristian Romero’s outstretched arm, denying the Red Devils what appeared to be a clear penalty. While VAR reviewed the ruling, referee Michael Oliver decided to award the visitors a corner.

Red Devils captain Bruno Fernandes was incensed that he wasn’t granted a penalty after the game and recommended that the VAR referees have post-game interviews to justify their choices.

WHAT THEY SAID: Fernandes said, “You have to question him, after the game. After the games, they must begin conducting interviews so they can defend themselves. There were no justifications for the VAR not seeing it because it was an obvious penalty. They made a big deal last week about United not having a penalty against. I’m interested to find out if this week’s events will follow the same pattern as last week’s. I’m interested to see whether Jon Moss makes an appearance to apologize to our locker room, like they did to the Wolves management. I really hope he can.

THE BIGGER PICTURE:

In Manchester United’s opening game week clash, Wolves were wrongly denied a late penalty in their 1-0 defeat at Old Trafford after Andre Onana clashed with two opposition players inside the penalty box during the added time. Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) chief Howard Webb later apologized to Wolves for the mistake and referees Simon Hooper and Michael Salisbury, who were on VAR duty, were dropped from the referee appointments for the coming weekend’s Premier League games.
