Manchester United’s pursuit of Benjamin Pavard as a potential replacement for former captain Harry Maguire has hit a roadblock, as Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich have turned down United’s initial offer for the talented defender.
Bayern Munich is reportedly open to the idea of selling Benjamin Pavard this summer, as his contract is set to expire in June 2024. Manchester United is looking to secure a cost-effective deal for the versatile defender.
According to Bild, the initial bid from Manchester United has been rejected by Bayern Munich. Negotiations between the two clubs are expected to continue as they work towards reaching an agreement.
In the recent DFL Supercup match against RB Leipzig, Pavard played only 45 minutes as a right-back before being substituted at halftime for Noussair Mazrouai by manager Thomas Tuchel.
The report also indicates that Pavard has expressed his desire to leave Bayern Munich to the club’s leadership. He is reportedly eager to join Manchester United and be part of the team’s transformation under manager Ten Hag.
Although the exact transfer fee remains undisclosed, reports suggest that Bayern Munich is seeking approximately £30 million for Benjamin Pavard. This figure coincides with the amount that Manchester United is set to receive from West Ham for the transfer of Harry Maguire. However, Manchester United is aiming to secure Pavard’s services for a reduced fee to conserve funds.
Since his arrival at Bayern Munich in 2019, Pavard has contributed significantly with 12 goals and 12 assists in 163 appearances. Prior to joining Bayern, he achieved the status of a World Cup champion with the French national team in the 2018 tournament.
Pavard delivered an impressive individual performance during the 2022-23 season, registering seven goals and one assist in 43 matches. He showcased his versatility by featuring both as a right-back and a centre-back under the management of Thomas Tuchel.
While there were speculations linking Pavard to a potential move to Barcelona, the La Liga champions have shifted their focus to pursuing Joao Cancelo from Manchester City as they search for a new right-back option.
