The transfer of Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo to Liverpool, which would set a new British record, is reportedly nearing completion.
The Athletic reports that Brighton has accepted a bid from Jurgen Klopp’s team worth up to £110 million.
Former Chelsea target Caicedo, 21, is expected to sign with Liverpool as soon as this Friday.
As of Thursday night’s midnight deadline, Liverpool had offered £110 million, and Chelsea had offered £100 million to Brighton.
The Reds and the player are expected to have no trouble reaching an agreement on personal terms, and a medical examination is set for this Friday.
This summer, Moises Caicedo appears set to sign with Liverpool instead of Chelsea.
After outbidding Chelsea’s £100 million offer, Liverpool is preparing to make a British record bid of up to £110 million.
He had previously stated his desire to join Chelsea, but Liverpool swooped in and stole him away.
Given Chelsea’s prolonged pursuit of the midfielder this summer, Caicedo signing with Liverpool would be a major blow.
While it now appears unlikely that a deal will be finalised between the Blues and Brighton before the transfer window closes at the beginning of September, the Blues had previously appeared confident that they would.
This setback comes just two days before Chelsea’s season opener against Liverpool at Stamford Bridge, and it appears they will lose out on his signature to one of their closest rivals.
As they look to further strengthen their midfields, both teams have shown significant interest in Southampton’s Romeo Lavia.
In the previous window, Liverpool signed Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai.
Southampton has rejected three offers from Liverpool, the most recent one being £46 million, which is below the club’s asking price of £50 million.
This week, Chelsea increased their bid to £47 million but has not yet reached an agreement with the Saints.
Caicedo will fill the void left by Fabinho’s departure to Saudi Arabia, though Liverpool’s midfield has already been greatly improved by the additions of Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai this summer.
After seemingly losing their primary target for the entire summer transfer window, United States national team captain Tyler Adams of Leeds, Chelsea recently triggered the release clause to acquire Adams.
