UPDATE: Key Barcelona defender likely to be out for long after sustaining injury against Tottenham

Ronald Araujo, a crucial defender for FC Barcelona, suffered an injury during the Joan Gamper Trophy match against Tottenham Hotspur, which gave the team a serious worry.

The right-back who represented Uruguay internationally in the match got off to a strong start.

The 24-year-old Barcelona defender, though, appeared to have an injury and pulled up on the field just before the halfway point.

Araujo had been the target of a hasty challenge from an opposing player and had also made a strong run down the right side, which may have produced muscle pain, but it is unclear what may have caused the injury.

Araujo then turned to the bench and requested to be substituted. Sergi Roberto, the first captain of Barcelona, replaced the defender a short while later.

Given Araujo’s significance to Xavi’s team, the Blaugrana will be concerned about this.

Remember that Inigo Martinez, a recent acquisition, is still not totally well, and that Andreas Christensen is also recovering from a minor ailment he sustained on the US trip.

Xavi and company will be hoping that Araujo’s injury is not serious and that he can return as soon as possible because the new season is set to begin in less than a week.
