Jayson Tatum Credits ‘Tough Love’ from Parents Justin Tatum and Brandy Cole-Barnes for His Athletic Success

Brandy played a pivotal role in shaping Jayson Tatum’s academic and athletic journey, emphasizing the value of education and maintaining strong grades. In an interview with Sentinel & Enterprise, she revealed her commitment to ensuring her son’s success both on and off the basketball court. Brandy made it clear to Jayson that they don’t settle for C grades, pushing him to aim for B’s and above. She knew his potential and capabilities, and she wanted him to strive for excellence.

Even though Jayson had a passion for basketball, Brandy never compromised on the importance of academics. She once had to call his bluff when he tried to take his studies lightly. In fourth or fifth grade, she prevented him from attending a basketball tournament as a consequence for not taking his grades seriously. It was a wake-up call for Jayson, and he realized that his mother meant business when it came to his education.

As Jayson’s basketball talents became evident from an early age, Brandy knew he had a special gift. In an interview with Today, she mentioned that she foresaw his NBA aspirations as early as fourth grade. He possessed a natural talent and a unique ability to make moves on the court that couldn’t be taught. Brandy recognized that this was something he was born with, and she wanted to nurture and support his dreams while also allowing him to be a child.

While encouraging Jayson to pursue his basketball dreams, Brandy also set boundaries for him. She believed that children must desire success more than their parents, and she made sure Jayson understood that he needed to put in the effort to achieve his goals. Brandy offered him all the resources and support he needed, but she expected him to play his part in the process.

Jayson’s journey to the NBA was not the only significant event in his life. He became a father to a son named Jayson “Deuce” Christopher Tatum Jr. in December 2017 when he was just 19 years old. Brandy embraced her role as a grandmother and considered Deuce a blessing in every way. In an ESPN interview, she expressed her joy in seeing Jayson in a different light as a father and how Deuce brought a new perspective to his life, even beyond basketball.

Jayson has been vocal about wanting to be a present and supportive father, drawing inspiration from the strong relationships he witnessed among his friends and their fathers while growing up. He was determined to be best friends with his son and provide the support and love he might have missed during his own childhood.

As Jayson’s career in the NBA continues to thrive, his family, including his father Justin, celebrates his accomplishments with pride. Justin was present during the 2023 All-Star Game where Jayson scored a game-high 55 points and won the MVP trophy. The bond between Jayson and his family is evident, and their support plays a crucial role in his success and personal growth.

Overall, Brandy’s influence and support have played a significant role in shaping Jayson Tatum into both a successful athlete and an individual who values education and family. Her commitment to his education, along with her belief in his talents, has undoubtedly contributed to his remarkable achievements in the NBA. As he continues to excel on the court, Jayson remains grounded, inspired by his son and the lessons learned from his own upbringing.

Jayson only spent one year at Duke University before being selected in the NBA, but Brandy’s one goal is for him to complete his education.

“That means a lot to me. Many Duke students return to complete their degrees. It doesn’t matter how long it takes, I told him. He knows how much I’ve worked, Brandy remarked in an ESPN interview.

“I knew he was gifted — he would do things and make moves and that you just couldn’t teach,” she remarked. It seems to be something he was born with.
