Marcus Rashford says he is inspired by his mum after hearing her crying at night as she struggled to provide for family

Marcus Rashford revealed that the sound of his mother’s tears in the quiet of the night, her determination to support the family alone, became the catalyst for his mission to alleviate child hunger during the lockdown.

The prominent striker for both Manchester United and the English national team shared that his own mother’s lack of assistance during their difficult times fuels his dedication to ensuring other families have enough to eat.

The footballer told Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid about what drives him to help families

At just 22 years old, Marcus Rashford, currently earning £200,000 weekly and owning a £1.85 million Cheshire home, is steadfast in his commitment to make children the top priority for the Government.

In a poignant letter he wrote last month, Rashford shared his poignant upbringing, recounting nights when he heard his mother’s tears as she grappled with the weight of providing for their family.

Rashford’s efforts have already led to the collection of £20 million, enabling the provision of 3.9 million meals for vulnerable children during the lockdown period.

His current focus is on extending free school meals to encompass every child from a Universal Credit household, potentially aiding an additional 1.5 million children. To further his cause, Rashford has established a child poverty task force in partnership with major supermarket chains.

When interviewed on Good Morning Britain by Susanna Reid and Piers Morgan, Rashford revealed the positive responses he has received from families he has assisted. He stated, “They express immense gratitude and happiness. Their words of appreciation drive me, especially as my own mother did not have access to such support during my youth.”

Addressing a recent Twitter disagreement with a Tory MP who asserted that it’s a “parent’s job to feed their children,” Rashford commented on the stigma surrounding seeking help. He emphasized the value of asking for assistance when needed and highlighted that his response aimed to emphasize the importance of breaking down this stigma.

“That was the reality I faced, and I’m grateful that my talent in playing football provided a path to lift us out of that struggle. Unfortunately, not everyone has the opportunity to find their way out, and many are left without the support they need.

“The most vulnerable among us often lack the means to make their pleas for help heard loudly, but for those who are ready to share their stories, my aim is to provide them with a platform to do just that. And for those who may not be ready to speak up, I am dedicated to being their voice and advocating for their needs.”
