Man United player ratings: Onana shines, Rashford and Wan-Bissaka struggle in loss to Real Madrid

Manchester United suffered their second defeat in 48 hours, falling 2-0 to an impressive Real Madrid side.

With a delightful chip, English superstar Jude Bellingham put the Spanish giants ahead early, and Joselu, formerly of Stoke City, sealed victory in Houston with a spectacular overhead kick.

United struggled in the final third, and it was a long night for Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho, who led the line, with the latter coming off the bench and struggling.

Andre Onana could do little about the two goals he gave up on his United debut, but he demonstrated that he has plenty of energy as Ten Hag’s new No. 1.

Chris Wheeler of Mail Sport was on hand to rate the United players.

On his Manchester United debut, Andre Onana was helpless to stop Real Madrid’s two goals.

Jude Bellingham (middle) scored first, and Joselu sealed the victory late on.

ONANA, ANDRE 6.5 – Beaten by Bellingham less than six minutes into his debut and had no chance with Joselu’s second, but made a couple of good saves and did more than enough with the ball at his feet to demonstrate what he will bring to United.

AARON WAN-BISSAKA – 5.5 He had his hands full with Real’s pace and Bellingham’s threat down the left, and was caught off guard at one point in the first half by Vinicius Junior.

VARANE, RAPHAEL 6 – Stepped up to try to play Bellingham offside and was caught out on the goal despite the fact that Real Madrid’s new £115 million signing appeared to be just offside.

LISANDRO MARTINEZ 6 – Another game, another booking for a naughty challenge on Bellingham before halftime. Epitomes Ten Hag’s assertion that there are no friends.

Raphael Varane (right) and Aaron Wan-Bissaka (back) had a long night in defence.

LUKE SHAW 6.5 – Won a good duel with Luka Modric and got forward well before being replaced by nine United players shortly after the hour mark.

CASEMIRO 5.5 – Returned to United’s starting lineup for the first time in pre-season against his former club, but still needs to catch up.

KOBBIE MAINOO 5 – Teenager was given the start again, but was injured within two minutes and had to leave.

FERNANDES, BRUNO 6.5 – Started on the right to make room for new signing Mount before switching to No. 10 in the second half. Andriy Lunin was forced into a smart late save from range.

MASON MOUNT 7 – Played No. 10 and came close to equalising from close range while also executing arguably the game’s best tackle with a recovery challenge on Tchouameni.

Mason Mount (right) came close to equalising and looked sharp in a No 10 role.

ALEJANDRO GARNACHO 7 – Looked lively in his first preseason start and wasn’t afraid to shoot on sight on several occasions.

5.5 MARCUS RASHFORD – Rashford, like the majority of United’s international players who returned to training later, is still working his way through the gears and has struggled to make an impact here.

Amad, Dalot 6 (for Wan-Bissaka 62), Antony 7 (for Garnacho 62), Heaton, Sancho 6 (for Rashford 62), Pellistri 6.5 (for Mount 62), Bishop, Williams 6 (for Casemiro 62), Van de Beek 6 (for Eriksen 62), McTominay 6.5 (for Shaw 62), Forson.

Martinez and Fernandes have been booked.

Marcus Rashford still needs to catch up after being largely ineffective in the game.

REAL MADRID (4-3-3): Lunin 6.5; Carvajal 6.5, Rudiger 7 (Nacho 46, 6), Alaba 6.5 (Militao 46, 6), Garcia 6 (Mendy 46, 6.5); Modric 6 (Diaz 62, 6), Camavinga 6.5, Tchouameni 6 (Kroos 46, 5.5), Bellingham 7.5 (Valverde 46, 6); Rodrygo 6.5 (Joselu 62, 7), Vinicius Jnr 7 (Paz 72, 6).

Courtois, Odriozola, Vazquez, Abdelkader, Guler, Pineiro, Nico, Gonzalez are the substitutes.

Bellingham 6, Joselu 89 are the scorers.
