Arsenal player ratings: Odegaard is the only bright spot in a defensive disaster, while Declan Rice remains anonymous

ARSENAL were defeated 2-0 by Premier League rivals Manchester United after a poor performance in the United States.

The Gunners faced United at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, but they were unable to replicate their dominant performance against the MLS All-Stars on Wednesday.

Bruno Fernandes’ powerful long-range shot that Aaron Ramsdale couldn’t hold opened the scoring for the Red Devils in the half-hour mark.

Gabriel Magalhaes and Takehiro Tomiyasu both took too long to shut down Fernandes.

Just seven minutes later, United doubled their lead when Gabriel lost possession in midfield, allowing Jadon Sancho to break through and beat Ramsdale with a clinical finish.

4 AARON RAMSDALE

He couldn’t instill the same level of trust between the sticks as he did against the MLS All-Stars. Carry the blame for Bruno Fernandes’ goal and did not save a single penalty.

5 JURRIEN TIMBER

The summer signing, who started at right-back, had only a few flashes of brilliance. Timber, on the other hand, demonstrated that he could work well with Bukayo Saka on the wing.

5 WILLIAM SALIBA

During Manchester United’s counter-attacks, he struggled.Mikel Arteta expected more from his star center-back.

MAGALHAES, GABRIEL – 2

Carries the blame for both goals because he failed to mark Fernandes during his run and was the one who gave the ball away before Jadon Sancho scored.

3 TAKEHIRO TOMIYASU

Struggled throughout the first half and was appropriately replaced at halftime. He was also partly to blame for Fernandes’ goal because he didn’t mark him in time – he was, however, playing out of position at left-back.

RICE, DECLAN – 5

Arsenal fans will have high expectations for their club’s record signing this season. Failed to anchor Arsenal’s midfield and was mostly anonymous throughout the game – but it’s early days.

5 KAI HAVERTZ

Like his two fellow summer arrivals, he’s uninspiring. Played on the left side of midfield and was unable to cause United any problems.

6 MARTIN ODEGAARD

Probably the best of the worst, but only by a small margin. With a clever through-ball from a free-kick, he almost got Arsenal back in the game, only for Eddie Nketiah to miss from close range.

On the right flank, he demonstrated that he could work well with Timber. However, it was a far cry from his dominant performance against the All-Stars, in which he had two assists.

MARTINELLI, GABRIEL – 5

Mostly in the background for Arsenal in both halves. There were no significant threats on the left for either United right-back.

4 EDDIE NKETIAH

After a brilliant through pass by Odegaard, he had a perfect chance to put Arsenal back in the game, but he missed from close range. To take Gabriel Jesus’ place, I’ll have to do a lot more.

KIERAN TIERNEY – 5 SUBS

On the left, he performed better than Tomiyasu, but he didn’t add any significant spark. He appears to be on his way out.

After coming off the bench, he didn’t contribute much. But he doesn’t have to worry about his position in Arteta’s starting XI just yet…

5 BEN WHITE

We didn’t add much in defense, but we kept United at bay. During the second half, there were far fewer leaks on the right than on the left.

5 THOMAS PARTEY

After coming on in the second half, he failed to instill confidence in the midfield. Partey’s future remains unknown.

5 JORGINHO

Nothing noteworthy from the midfielder. Jorginho and Partey both failed to limit United’s attacks after coming on in the second half and failed to push their teammates forward.

4 LEANDRO TROSSARD

Against the MLS All-Stars, he scored an incredible goal and dominated Arsenal’s first game of their US tour. He couldn’t replicate any of that against United, but he recovered from a knock he received against the All-Stars.

4 EMILE SMITH ROWE

Came on late and couldn’t light up the game. Smith Rowe was largely unknown after his debut.

4 FABIO VIEIRA

Like Partey and Jorginho, he struggled to keep United quiet. Didn’t do much to protect the back four, and then missed a penalty.
