David Beckham on the Brink of Tears as Lionel Messi Scores Winning Goal on Debut, Fulfilling Inter Miami Co-owner’s Dream

Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham was moved to tears after Lionel Messi’s stoppage-time winner on the debut of his new signing.

Messi came off the bench in the 54th minute of the League Cup game against Cruz Azul to make his debut for the MLS team, and he made it memorable.

In the 94th minute, the Argentine curled a stunning free kick into the top left corner to prevent the match from going to penalties.

The goal secured a Hollywood debut for the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner, who even moved co-owner David Beckham to tears.

The England legend, who was in the stands with his wife Victoria, was seen with tears in his eyes, visibly moved by the goal.

And he wasn’t done soaking in the moment when the final whistle blew.

‘To be honest, as soon as I saw the free kick, I thought, ‘This is the way it’s supposed to end,’ he said on Apple’s MLS Season Pass.

‘Especially when you have players on the pitch like Leo and Sergio [Busquets] – that’s what they produce.

‘It’s really exciting tonight for our fans,’ he added. ‘All of these people who came down here just to see Leo step on the pitch, let alone do what he’s done. Sergio’s performance was truly outstanding.

‘But you know, it’s a dream come true for everyone in this stadium and across the country to see Leo step into the MLS and perform. ‘There aren’t many words for it.’

Beckham, no stranger to a late free-kick, last played professionally in 2013, capping off a glittering career with PSG.

And, prior to Messi’s winner, he found the experience of helplessly watching the League Cup match from the stands difficult.

‘It’s terrible… watching these games is so frustrating as an ex-player. If you’re a player, you can do something about it; as an owner, you can’t,’ he explained.

‘However, tonight is about the people. It all comes down to this. This is what I, Jorge, Jose, and the club have always seen as our vision.

‘This is what we witnessed. So this is a very special night for us, for our fans, for everyone in this stadium, and for you. This country is at a crossroads. This league is at a crossroads. And it’s a particularly proud moment for us.’
